How much land do we need?

There is a story which I sometimes remember.　 When I was a high school student, my math teacher told us a story.　 I forget the source of the story . . . . . but . . . here it is . . . . .
今でも　時々　思い出す話があります｡　　私が高校生の時　数学の先生が話してくれた物語です。　話の出所は忘れましたが　・　・　・
Once upon a time, A landowner who had a huge amount of land said to a man　 "I will give you a　horse and as much land as you can walk around riding on horseback before sunset."
むかし、むかし、　大地主がある男に馬を与え、、日没までに歩き回った分だけの土地をあげようと約束しました。
The man rode the horse around with no rest or food and he came back to his starting point just before sunset.　 He got a lot of land, 　however he and the horse were too tired and they could not get up any more.　 In the end,　 the only land they needed was enough to be buried in.
その男は飲まず、食わず、休まず、馬で目一杯回ってきて　広大な土地を手に入れましたが彼も馬も疲れ果て、二度と起き上がれず、　結局必要だったのは彼らを埋葬するだけの土地だったのです。
My teacher,　 who I respect,　 always told us, 　"Don't be greedy for gain, 　but acquire education". 　I sometime remember his gentle voice and smile.
私が尊敬していたその先生は　いつも、「守銭奴だけではいけませんよ、　頭を使いましょうね」　と言っていました、　その先生の優しい声と笑顔を時々思い出します。
